WAN Optimization for Video
Configurable WAN solutions for video that reduce network constraints up to 95%
The problems that video can create on a network cannot be solved by brute force. You have to be clever and creative about how you solve video infrastructure problems.
Meet the challenges of the video-enabled workplace with confidence.
What is WAN Optimization for video in the enterprise?
Wide area network (WAN) optimization refers to the practice of maximizing the efficiency of data flowing across a network. Because video streams contain a lot of data – especially in today’s era of interactive, high-definition video streaming — they can put tremendous stress on a network when too many concurrent users attempt to view or download video content. The resulting stress can not only reduce the speed of the video playback, but also put the organization’s critical applications and data at risk of slow or no performance.
What are the main factors driving the need for today’s video WAN optimization?
WAN optimization for video is not new, but the scope and magnitude of enterprise video adoption is impacting enterprise WAN optimization more than ever. Cisco recently reported that increased adoption of advanced video communications in the enterprise segment will cause business IP traffic to grow at a CAGR of 18% between 2015-2020, effectively doubling by 2020.
This is due to the confluence of several workplace and market trends including: the explosive growth of video-on-demand (VOD); the increasing availability and use of live video streaming tools and applications from telepresence to Periscope; the growth in a mobile workforce, which will account for 42% of all workers globally by 2020; the proliferation of user generated video; and the increasing number of applications and workflows being moved to the cloud. In fact, enterprise cloud adoption is forecast to grow nearly 50% between 2017-2019. Compounding all of this is the growth in mobile video, which is set to increase by a factor of 11x between 2015-2020 and will account for 75% of all mobile data traffic by 2020.
How are companies currently addressing WAN optimization for video?
Over the years, companies have adopted a variety of approaches to deal with the network and bandwidth issues created by video streaming. These range from physical solutions — like reducing access points to only a few conference rooms or auditorium — to technical solutions like ‘dumbing down’ internal streams to a lower resolution or buying and maintaining expensive network caching gear. Each of these solutions is suboptimal in that they can be high-cost, low-quality or both.
How does uStudio approach video WAN Optimization?
uStudio’s approach to WAN optimization for video helps you get orders of magnitude more high-def video to your workforce. Like you, we always seek the most elegant solutions for accelerating video delivery while reducing network bandwidth issues and minimizing costs. We first work with you to understand your network — what it’s running on, all of the factors driving bandwidth consumption, expected usage patterns by content type/device/time of day/geography, et al — and work with you to apply the right optimization technology for your organization’s video strategy.
We can help you increase QoS across your live streaming use cases from 1-to-many town hall meetings, to many-to-many videoconferencing, to one-to-one telepresence issues. We can accelerate VOD delivery for your recorded video assets. We can adapt to a variety of security and authentication protocols to help you manage users and filter out unwanted video traffic. And our configurable CDN solutions let you use any of our available Tier 1 CDN set-ups or your own existing solutions.
More than reliable. Get Responsive. Get Real-Time. Get Results.
What are some examples of technical solutions uStudio provides for video WAN Optimization?
The common objective of most uStudio customers is to securely stream interactive video — both live video and VOD — to their global audiences across a variety of use cases without slowing down their network or limiting access to critical applications.
Some uStudio customers achieve this with our peer-to-peer (P2P) video caching solution, which we deliver through a partnership with Hive Streaming. P2P sharing works well when many members of the same community are co-located and are requesting the same content simultaneously. Because P2P caching enables concurrent users to share the video data that their neighbors have already downloaded – rather than each computer trying to fetch the exact same content from the company internet – your network congestion is dramatically reduced during viewing peak times. The P2P approach also allows you to make use of your existing infrastructure – spinning resources up or down as needed — with video traffic only sent between clients that have authenticated each other. It’s simply a more efficient and effective alternative to heavy infrastructure investments.
Other customers have use cases that derive from employees — especially telecommuters — seeking to communicate using video via chat applications, videoconferencing and the like. In these instances, concurrent users and duplicate traffic is not the issue. For these situations, customers tend to opt for directed upload and publishing to internal network streaming and storage servers. uStudio works with companies to deliver video files to HTTP-based storage services and private cloud solutions, and routes users through DNS or IP configuration based on location. Building a hybrid internal service + external CDN strategy enables remote workers to minimize their impact on internal networks. We can also accommodate targeted deployments of software capabilities in the platform that may be required to reduce chatter between globally distributed teams. Deploying uStudio’s upload, processing, transcoding, or delivery software to nearby public cloud regions or internal private data centers can reduce WAN traffic without increasing the complexity of an end user’s experience.
Finally, for customers where traditional “few to many” broadcasts are the primary use case, traditional out-of-the-box hardware or software solutions that manage proxy and caching for HTTP(S) services are already available as commodity solutions and may be all that is necessary if no new use cases are forecast to emerge. In those instances, we may recommend one of those commodity solutions.
What benefits are common across all of uStudio’s WAN optimization solutions?
No matter which WAN solution you choose, uStudio always has your modern, mobile workforce covered. uStudio delivers high-definition video to each and every user via mobile-responsive video players that automatically detect the operating system, browser, device type, screen resolution, bitrate, network capacity and country or region, and automatically optimize playback accordingly. Our Live and VOD solutions utilize adaptive (vs. progressive) video streaming over https networks, so your audience can enjoy a real-time viewing experience that is perfectly optimized for the available bandwidth. No matter when they press play or what kind of connection they’re on, your users will receive the highest quality stream available at every second of playback.
IT executives will appreciate our powerful dashboards with real-time and historical Quality of Service (QoS)/Quality of Experience (QoE) network traffic visualizations, providing drill-down capabilities for troubleshooting the viewing experiences of individual client users. We also provide silent test capabilities that let you simulate and adjust network configurations within and across sites in advance of your broadcast, all without disrupting your network’s users during testing.
Video ROI that speaks for itself.
How are uStudio customers using our WAN optimization solutions?
Many of our customers leverage video to connect with their workforce real-time for a variety of internal communications initiatives including:
- Live streaming conferences or town hall meetings across their campuses
- Broadcasting quarterly earnings calls on their internal network
- Hosting culture- and team-building events with a participatory element
- Managing sales kickoff meetings and trainings
- Distributing crisis communication or real-time customer service updates
What types of results are uStudio customers experiencing with our WAN optimization solutions?
Our customers are already demonstrating measurable success with their internal streaming initiatives. For example, a major retailer was previously using satellite feeds for its live events, which demanded 6 weeks to pre-order and complex uplink requirements – not ideal for cost-saving or real-time communications. Upon adopting uStudio for their internal communications, they were able to immediately improve their quality of service, reduce network constraints and costs across thousands of concurrent users.
How much should customers expect to save?
This depends on the type of WAN solution chosen but can yield network congestion reductions of 96-98% for live streaming and 75-98% for on-demand streaming. In addition, many of our WAN solutions leverage the investments in compute, storage, and networking that you have already made – taking advantage of existing network resources for smarter savings.
We broadcast quarterly meetings, executive communications, and product launches to all offices worldwide.
