Some uStudio customers achieve this with our peer-to-peer (P2P) video caching solution, which we deliver through a partnership with Hive Streaming. P2P sharing works well when many members of the same community are co-located and are requesting the same content simultaneously. Because P2P caching enables concurrent users to share the video data that their neighbors have already downloaded – rather than each computer trying to fetch the exact same content from the company internet – your network congestion is dramatically reduced during viewing peak times. The P2P approach also allows you to make use of your existing infrastructure – spinning resources up or down as needed — with video traffic only sent between clients that have authenticated each other. It’s simply a more efficient and effective alternative to heavy infrastructure investments.
Other customers have use cases that derive from employees — especially telecommuters — seeking to communicate using video via chat applications, videoconferencing and the like. In these instances, concurrent users and duplicate traffic is not the issue. For these situations, customers tend to opt for directed upload and publishing to internal network streaming and storage servers. uStudio works with companies to deliver video files to HTTP-based storage services and private cloud solutions, and routes users through DNS or IP configuration based on location. Building a hybrid internal service + external CDN strategy enables remote workers to minimize their impact on internal networks. We can also accommodate targeted deployments of software capabilities in the platform that may be required to reduce chatter between globally distributed teams. Deploying uStudio’s upload, processing, transcoding, or delivery software to nearby public cloud regions or internal private data centers can reduce WAN traffic without increasing the complexity of an end user’s experience.
Finally, for customers where traditional “few to many” broadcasts are the primary use case, traditional out-of-the-box hardware or software solutions that manage proxy and caching for HTTP(S) services are already available as commodity solutions and may be all that is necessary if no new use cases are forecast to emerge.
