Why podcasting is a great channel for internal communications

In this interview, Craig and Jen discussed why private podcasts are a great tool for internal communication needs. Some points they made to support this argument include the following:

  • It’s a secure way for distributing corporate information
  • Voice carries so much more meaning than the written word - like email, PDFs and PowerPoints
  • Voice is 500% more effective at conveying meaning
  • Podcasting allows information to be organized easily, like through show/episode format
  • Podcasts can be consumed while commuting, exercising or multitasking
  • Podcasting is a great way to reach non-desk workers or those without a corporate email account
  • Information can be revisited for later listening
  • Podcast analytics help you monitor the impact of your internal communications and make adjustments where needed
  • And more!

How to set up and develop an internal podcast

In this interview, Jen elaborated on each P within the 6 P’s of Podcasting - uStudio’s proprietary framework for enterprise podcasting programs. This is a great resource for employers to set up podcasting as an internal comms channel. The 6Ps are:

  • People
  • Programming
  • Production
  • Publishing
  • Promotion
  • Performance

In this interview, Jen gives detailed examples of considerations for each P. Her tips include:

  • Leveraging leadership support to promote your podcast to employees and get it off the ground quickly.
  • Defining your podcasts’ format, purpose, etc in an editorial calendar or show brief.
  • Recording a podcast can be as easy as using your mobile device or an inexpensive service like SquadCast.
  • Add your own corporate logos and branding to your distribution app to make your podcasts unique to your organization.
  • Leverage uStudio’s promotional features to get more eyes on your podcast, like our promotional embeds.
  • Consider holding a contest to promote your podcast.

All in all, it’s important to just get started and not worry about perfection. Jen claims there’s no question podcasters will look back on their first episode and smile, because everyone improves as their program grows.
