5 Tips for Launching a Video Podcast

There was a time when video podcasting was frowned upon. It was considered a flash in the pan, but, as always, consumers make the choice.
As of 2012, Edison Research found that more than 26% of Americans over the age of 12 have watched a video podcast. On the surface, that doesn’t sound very significant. But when you apply that figure to the US population of 311 million people, you realize that almost 81 million people have enjoyed at least one video podcast. Even if you count only those actively watching video podcasts (12%), you are still looking at the tiny number of 37 million people!
Lots of our customers use podcasting as a way to effectively publish ongoing video series through a branded and highly mobile channel. If you’re still reading, then you’re probably interested in how best to launch a video podcast.
Below is a list of five simple things to consider once you’ve chosen to make a podcast.
- Is your content a good fit for podcasting? Podcasts work best for a series of related content. If you’re trying to distribute a brand video or a short film, it’s not a good fit. Additionally, if you don’t have at least 3 videos to start, iTunes won’t accept the feed.
- Frequency? How often do you plan to release content (daily, weekly, monthly)? you’ll want to set an expectation with your audience. Don’t forget to stick to the plan! Once your frequency is decided, know you’re committing yourself to that schedule.
- Don’t start just yet. If you only have a couple of podcast videos on hand, you’ll want more. Having at least a couple of months of content prepped and ready at any given time is important. This might push your launch plans back, but it’s better to launch and know you have plenty of room to catch up.
- Describe it. Make sure that you have a solid description of your podcast as well as thorough information about each piece of content.
- Share it! Make sure you let your audience or prospective audience know that there’s a podcast out there that needs viewing.
